New: send files with no internet at all. Try offline mode

FreeNo account needed

Your files. Your devices. One scan to connect them.

Move photos, videos and documents between your devices with no cable, no setup and no account.

Receive files

No cables, no hassle

Open Ferry and start. Your files stay between your devices.

There is no sign-up form between you and your files, and nothing to plug in.

Ferry helps your devices find each other. The files then go from one to the other, and are not uploaded to a file store on the way.

How it works

From one screen to another in three steps.

No app to install, no account to create and no settings to figure out.

Open Ferry on the device that has your files and choose Send files.

On the sending device

One button gives you a QR code and a 6-digit code.

Everything you need,
nothing you don’t.

The parts of a file transfer that matter, and none of the setup.

  • # Many files

Pick several files or drop a whole folder. They go in one transfer and the folder keeps its structure.

  • # Live progress

See the speed, the time left, and whether the route is direct or relayed.

  • # Any device

Laptop, phone or tablet, in any current browser. There is nothing to install.

  • # QR or code

Scan the QR code with a phone, or type six digits on a laptop.

  • # Picks up again

If the connection drops, the transfer continues from the last saved piece.

  • # No account

Start a transfer without signing up. A transfer stays open for 24 hours.

Privacy

Your files take
the direct route.

Speed depends on your devices and your network. Some networks block direct connections.

Only your two devices can read it
Files and text are encrypted before they leave this device, with keys the two devices agree on between themselves.
A code you can check
Both screens show the same 6-digit security code when the connection is private.
Nothing is stored on the way
Ferry helps your devices find each other. The files then travel between them and are not uploaded to file storage.
Works without internet
On the same Wi-Fi or hotspot, offline mode connects two devices with QR codes alone.

FAQs

What is Ferry?

Ferry is a free web app that sends files, folders and text from one device to another. The files are encrypted on the sending device and go directly to the receiving device, so they are never stored on a server.

Do I need to create an account?

No. You can start a transfer without signing up.

Do I need to install an app?

No. Ferry runs in the browser on both devices. You can add it to your home screen if you want it to open like an app.

How do I connect my devices?

Choose Send files on one device. On a phone, point the camera at the QR code. On a laptop, type the 6-digit code or open the link.

Is there a file size limit?

No. Ferry sets no size cap. Files are written to storage as they arrive, so the only limit is the free space on the receiving device.

Are my files uploaded to Ferry?

No. Files are encrypted on the sending device and travel to the receiving device. The server only helps the two devices find each other.

Is Ferry free?

Yes. Ferry is free, with no paid plan, no advertising and no account.

Is Ferry open source?

Yes. The web app, the server functions and the command line tool are open source under the MIT licence, and the code is on GitHub.

How long does a transfer stay open?

24 hours, or until the sender ends it. After that the link and code stop working.

What if my devices cannot connect?

Some office, school and mobile networks block direct connections. Put both devices on the same Wi-Fi and try again, or use offline mode.

How fast are transfers?

As fast as the connection between your two devices. On the same Wi-Fi the files never leave your network.

Can I send multiple files?

Yes. Select several files or a whole folder. Up to 16 devices can join one transfer.

Can I send files without internet?

Yes. Put both devices on the same Wi-Fi or phone hotspot and open offline mode. The devices connect by scanning each other's QR codes and nothing leaves your network.

Your files are ready to move.

Open Ferry on both devices, scan to connect, and send what you need.

It is on the screen of the sending device.

Paste the link the sender copied for you.

On a phone, point the camera app at the QR code on the sending device. It opens the transfer by itself.
